Issa’s Humanity and Humour: A Haibun Passage from His Travel Journal Oraga Haru

Everyone loves Issa’s haiku for their immediacy and evidence of his seemingly simple humanity, yet we don’t always pause long enough to study the context that might expand our appreciation. Ray Rasmussen, one of the four founders of A Hundred Gourds, returns as guest author of this issue’s feature, an in-depth study of one of Issa’s haibun passages. Ray demonstrates that the time taken to read and reflect more thoroughly brings great rewards.

Submissions Deadline

The deadline for all submissions to AHG 3.4 (the September 2014 issue) is June 15th. AHG has an open submissions policy: any submissions received after the deadline will be filed for consideration for the December 2014 issue. Please check our submissions page for details and editors’ guidelines.

Την Κυριακή, 25 Μάη 2014, ο Ελληνο-Αυστραλιανός Πολιτιστικός Σύνδεσμος (Greek-Australian Cultural League) στο πλαίσιο της Έκθεσης Τέχνης Antipodean Palette, οργάνωσε Ποιητικό Απόγευμα υπό τη γενική επωνυμία “Metamorphosis”, στην Γκαλερί Steps, 62 Lygon Street, Carlton, στη Μελβούρνη. Συμμετείχαν 9 ποιητές και ποιήτριες-μέλη τoy Συνδέσμου που διάβασαν έργα τους στα αγγλικά και ελληνικά.
Η ευθύνη της όλης οργάνωσης ανήκε στο μέλος του Δ.Σ. του Greek-Australian Cultural League, Paul Kyritsis, ο οποίος έκανε την παρουσίαση και είχε το συντονισμό της εκδήλωσης.

Translation might be a mystery to most, but it’s an essential part of our literary tradition and the world of writing. Ever wanted to see exactly how it works? At this unique event, you’ll have a chance to watch a single text in English being translated into multiple languages – Chinese (Mandarin), Italian, Indonesian and Spanish.

Greek Australian Cultural League of Melbourne
4th Annual Art Exhibition “Antipodean Palette” 2014

The Greek Australian Cultural League of Melbourne is hosting its 4th annual art exhibition, “Antipodean Palette” 2014. The exhibition aims to support visual arts in the community by showcasing the works of 12 practicing artists in a variety of media.

Artists participating this year are Angy Labiris, Anne Sampsonidis-Warren, Christos Avramoudas, Costa Athanassiou, Effie Mandalos, James Raftopoulos, Mary Raphael, Sophie Kagadis, Soula Mantalvanos, Thalia Andrews, Tina Sideris and Tony Pierrakos.

The exhibition will be held at Steps Gallery, 62 Lygon St Carlton from May 22 until June 1, 10 to 4 pm daily. An opening celebration will commence at 6.30pm, Thursday 22nd May with guest speaker Professor Nick Papastergiades from the University of Melbourne School of Cultural Studies. The duo ‘Polyxeni’ will entertain guests with Greek acoustic music.

The 10 day event will include the following book launches, bi-lingual poetry readings and demonstrations.

• 24th May, at 4.00pm we will present the work of well known Greek poet, Spiros Karamountzos. His translated into English of some of his collected works, “Poet’s Garden” will be presented by Dimitris Troaditis. Kostas Paivanas will showcase the poet’s body of work.
• 25th May, at 4.30pm as part of “Antipodean Palette” 2014, the GACL will host an afternoon of poetry centred about the theme of «metamorphosis». Eight Greek-Australian poets will entertain the audience with pieces intimately connected to the transformation of outer reality and inner mental life. Accompanying them will be special guest poet Judith Rodriguez for what promises to be cerebrally stimulating and memorable afternoon.
• 24th and 31st May, Soula Mantalvanos, an exhibiting artist will speak about her copperplate printing process.
