Aleppo’s sixty-six words by Andrew C Brown

reubenwoolley's avatarI am not a silent poet

I sit in an ambulance
shaken, uncertain.
Strangers tell me
I am safe now.
I wipe warm blood
from my brow but
cold images remain.
Panic all around me.
People scream.
I hear crying.
I sense fear.
There is shouting.
Anger.
I sit quiet.
More children arrive.
I am told my friend
will no longer be
able to play with
me among
rivers of
rubbled

That movie i saw when i was a kid by Carolyn Srygley-Moore

reubenwoolley's avatarI am not a silent poet

in the movie, tenderness ended with this: a circle of children cast stones at a bird, a bird already injured, & when the girl did not join, thrust a stone into her hand, chanting, throw it, throw it! today, wondering when the sweetness left, when the Sunday teacher stopped saying he was a sweet boy; when the brother first said “hey, did you know our little sister is a bitch?” i see, someone says, a gap in foundation, a furrowing of landscape, where we place the pit bull. you see, via the pit bull, a lack of negation, a holocaust through action & hope inverted. well. it is not a neutral conversation, he says, but it must be had. be had. i changed my bedroom walls pink to yellow at a young age; no shams, pillows without cases, curtains torn like human membrane at the window — to remember, that’s…

Heart of Darkness by David Urwin

reubenwoolley's avatarI am not a silent poet

Something is rotten in the states of Europe

children fighting for survival     tear-gassed

at close range

into the eyes

                                          down the throat.

Something is rotten in the Jungle

of democracy

and civilisation

refugee children starving

sent away from terror       to suffer in horror

or be killed on the road           to a better life.

Something is rotten in the states of America

land of the free                    capital of liberty.

Is something rotten at the heart of humanity?

Fear

emily's thoughts's avatarEmily's thoughts

Fear.jpg

I’m afraid of people

When the primitive feeling inside them awakens

I’m afraid of people

When their eyes fill up with hatred and enmity

I’m afraid of people

When their hand instead of holding pen, are holding gun

I’m afraid of people

When their words are hiding poison

Dread their need

For sovereignty which deprives freedom

I grieve thinking

So many evolution centuries seem to have passed in vain

I fear for our future

Could it be gloomier than our past?

But Still by Mark Carlisle

reubenwoolley's avatarI am not a silent poet

                                                But

                                            still the

                                      earth endures

 Although the tides

      may rise and

fall

                   as those winds of

change do

                              blow,

                               the

                           deserts

                   becoming oceans,

whilst

        farmers fields

    may cease to grow.

But

            stardust

       is born eternal,

                                   this is a spark

                                      that never

                                           dies.

                 Mankind always

                      seems so

                        infernal.

                           The

                       rains are

                   heaven’s cries.

                                         But

                                     still the

                              earth  endures.

                         Can

somebody

please tell me why?

                                 .      Or

                                     if they

                              know how do I?

Exile by Marjon Van Bruggen

reubenwoolley's avatarI am not a silent poet

Just another piece expelled from this planet.

On this island night comes

at mid-day.

Time is a train,

as usual running late along

a golden rail which

crosses the clock´s face

East to West.

He who makes it here

wonders for the rest of his days

why he is now blind,

seeing only in dreams and nightmares.

He gropes around, hopes

to find a treasure

hidden in the hole where Alice

plunged after her rabbit.

His name is not Alice.
