Mark Mordue, Things That Year – By Vagabond Press

Mark_Mordue_-_Things_That_Year_copyright_Vagabond_Press_grande

Things That Year is a random set of poems about life, love, and rock’n’roll. It’s about being inside some experiences, and outside of others, watching. The poems coalesce into a journey between beginnings, the deaths of friends, being lost and coming back from it all, home. Memories, like these poems, are just leaves on some weird tree inside us. Hopefully what falls also makes room for something new to grow.

Mark Mordue is a writer, journalist and editor based in Sydney. He was the winner of the 2010 Pascall Prize for Australian Critic of the Year. He is currently working on a biography of Nick Cave.

Diane Di Prima’s 80th Birthday

Diane Di Prima in a reading with Michael McClure

The great poet-activist-wise-woman-scholar, Diane Di Prima turned 80 years old yesterday (6 August)!  –

Happy Birthday Diane!

She, in the past year, has been teaching a course (at the Bay Area Public School) – “The Dream of Pre-History”
From her catalog note: “This class explores the beginnings of what we call “human” – the fall of Neanderthal and the rise of Cro-Magnon culture – the beginnings, dominance, and eclipse of matriarchy – the double invasions of patriarchy and oligarchy – and the persistent dream of a non-hierarchical society”

“The dream of a non-hierarchical society” – a beautiful and pure dream, these past four-score years, (despite the increasing brutality of “patriarchy and oligarchy”), a dream she has unflinchingly and heroically pursued – and continues to pursue.

Her Recollections of My Life As A Woman is required reading

Her Recollections of My Life As A Woman is required reading

Her poetry, for that matter, is (also) required reading

d

We conclude with her elegy for fellow cultural warrior, Amiri Baraka, published in the San Francisco Chronicle, on the occasion of his passing, last February:

For Amiri Baraka

don’ matter was it
yr left foot went bad
or yr right
don’ matter yr lungs
or yr heart
don’ matter if that
mass
on yr liver was
malignant
or what’s been wrong
so long
w/yr kidneys
don’t matter
drugs
or herbs
or acupuncture
or why you didn’t
go
to those appointments
don’t matter how much you drank
or if you drank
don’t matter you did or you didn’t
take drugs
meaning meds
or take drugs
meaning drugs
what matters now
what matters &
what’s gonna matter
a hundred
a thousand years
what matters when
what we wrote
what we thought
is lost
(& don’t kid yourself,
Ginsberg
it’s all of it
gonna be lost)
what matters:
every place
you read
every line
you wrote
every dog-eared book
or pamphlet
on somebody’s shelf
every skinny hopeful kid
you grinned that grin at
while they said
they thought they could write
they thought they could fight
they knew for sure
they could change the world
every human dream
you heard
or inspired
after the book-signing
after the reading
after one more
unspeakable
faculty dinner
after that god-awful flight
& the drive to the school
what matters:
the memory
of the poem
in thousands of minds
that quantum
of energy
passed over
passed
all the way over
to the other
to thousands
of others
what matters
Revolution
what matters
Revelation
what matters
the poem
taking root in
thousands
of minds …

“Revolution/what matters/Revelation/what matters”..

Happy Birthday, Diane!

Melbourne Subjective: An Anthology of Contemporary Melbourne Writing

10411806_251179481742458_5512014281005424452_n

Press Release

Melbourne Subjective: An Anthology of Contemporary Melbourne Writing will be launched at the Melbourne Athenaeum Library at 5.30 pm on Thursday August 14th.

Kevin Brophy will read his stream-of-consciousness prose poem ‘Memory, Nausea, Sydney Road’

and Antoni Jach will present his innovative mixed genre fiction, ‘Film Stills from “Luminescence”: a Moving Picture.’

When the Cartridge Family, a group of emerging writers, received a grant from the City of Melbourne to publish an anthology showcasing their own writing and that of some of the best established Melbourne writers as well as other emerging writers, they were thrilled.

‘We felt the concept of collective writing about Melbourne was a good one,’ said Patricia Poppenbeek, leader of the group. ‘Melbourne is a City of Literature, after all, and there are very few anthologies of Melbourne stories. The city of Melbourne is often invisible in our literature. Plus, Melburnians are passionate about their city. And we thought the idea of having a mix of writers was a good one. But we were still stunned when we got the grant!’

Nick Tsiavos is a bassist and composer whose work operates at the intersections of a number of cultural boundaries: from 8th century chant to contemporary minimalism, from syncretic hybridisation to experimental improvisation, from church to pub to concert hall. Since 1994, Tsiavos has been developing new music for the solo bass. As an ‘ethnic’ musician he is interested in, and informed by, non-canonical discourse, while refusing the tokenism that ethnicity often entails. Tsiavos has performed as a bass soloist at various venues throughout Australia. As the group’s artistic director, Tsiavos has produced a dark and confronting examination of Medieval and Byzantine chant. His group Jouissance has toured internationally and throughout Australia. 2pm-4pm

Beer DeLuxe upstairs at Federation Square

With the so called boat people and the refugee issue remaining and still dominating the current social and politican arena in Australia we thought it would great to give a voice to those voiceless, that is those who put their lives in a huge risk, crossing wild seas and lots of dangers trying to escape hard economic and social conditions and also political and other similar harrasment and settle in a civilised country and put their life dreams in a motion again.

In 19 July we will feature young poet and activist Benjamin Solah and the group Writing Through Fences: Poets from within immigration detention through the launch of Through The Wire: writing from immigration detention.

BENJAMIN SOLAH is a writer of truth, fiction and poetry, a spoken word artist and political activist. He grew up in the suburbs of Western Sydney but now lives in Melbourne where he studies Creative Writing at RMIT University. Editor of MelbourneSpokenWord.com and a convener of Keep Left. His writing has appeared in Overland, The Emerging Writer, Geek Mook and various anthologies. He has also co-produced a spoken word EP with Santo Cazzati “Duel Power”. He has performed poetry and spoken word at Passionate Tongues, Dan O’Connell, Midsumma Festival and Keep Left. He has been a refugee activist since 2004 and a member of Refugee Action Collective (Victoria). His chap book “Broken Bodies” is a series of poetic snapshots concerned with the treatment of asylun seekers.

WRITING THROUGH FENCES (WTF) is a writing group primarily made up of people who are or have been directly affected by the Australian immigration industry. It was established in 2013 by Janet Galbraith. The name Writing Through Fences refers to the ability of writers and artists to reach beyond fences and walls that attempt to contain, define and silence them. The name also situates this group within the long colonial practices of division of country, of displacement and incarceration characteristic of Australia’s ongoing racist history. Writing Through Fences recognises that we live, create and are imprisoned on stolen lands.

Over the past eleven months the group has grown into a strong community of creativity and support. It has become a place of refuge for many. Writing and art-making is an enlivening process where the practitioners are able to define and re-create selves that reach beyond and before the current violences they are experiencing, asserting their different experiences, personalities, styles, histories and literary traditions.

You can find WTF’s work at http://thearrivalists.tumblr.com/. If you wish to support this group you can find Friends of Writing Through Fences at https://www.facebook.com/friendsofWTF

We will have also our open mic readers.
