Miltos Sachtouris, Maria

Maria in thought takes off her nylons.
Voices of other people
came out of her body:
of a soldier who spoke like a bird
of a sick man who had died in the pain of sheep
and the cry of Maria’s little niece
to be born these days.

Maria cried, cried
now Maria laughed
she spread her arms, evening time
she stayed with her legs open

Then Maria’s eyes darkened
dark, black, blurred

The radio was loud
Maria cried
Maria cried
the radio was loud

Then Maria
opened her arms slowly
started flying
around the room.
