Dear poets, poetry lovers and fellow travellers to the poetic journeys

Under the full support of Federation Square and the auspices of Multicultural Arts Victoria we are pleased to announce that poetry@fedsquare is on again in 19 October, 2-4pm

We hope that October will be full of the Spring colors and scents translated into a poetic form and image.

Poetry@fedsquare is a free program of poetry, music and performance at Federation Square. Each month a group of different poets present their new (or not) work in a public setting to an ever-changing audience. It is also an opportunity to hear new words and voices.

This month we come again to you with three amazing local poets who are Bronwyn Lovell, Jennifer Mackenzie, Michael Crane and Janet Galbraith.

BRONWYN LOVELL studied Creative Writing at the University of Sydney and the University of Melbourne—where she was awarded the Hannah Barry Memorial Award for Performing Arts and the H.B. Higgins Scholarship for Advanced Studies in Poetry. Bronwyn has performed at the Overload Poetry Festival, the Melbourne Writers Festival and the Bendigo Writers Festival. She has been published in several local and international journals, and was shortlisted for the inaugural Montreal International Poetry Prize. She works for Writers Victoria on the editorial team of The Victorian Writer magazine; pens a monthly poetry column for feminist publication Lip Magazine; and holds an ongoing writing residency at Kinfolk Café in the Melbourne CBD as part of Australian Poetry’s Café Poets Program.

JENNIFER MACKENZIE is the author of Borobudur (Transit Lounge, 2009), republished in Indonesia as Borobudur and Other Poems (Lontar, Jakarta 2012). Her awards include the Marten Bequest Travelling Fellowship and the Felix Meyer Fellowship from the University of Melbourne. She has presented her work at a number of conferences, festivals and readings in Indonesia, Thailand and Hong Kong. Highlights have been reading at Borobudur itself as part of the Ubud Writers Festival in 2009, and reading with Goenawan Mahomed at The Call to Poetry event in Jakarta in 2012. Borobudur was highly commended in the Asia Australia Arts Awards 2013.

MICHAEL CRANE is a widely published Australian poet, writer and compere of poetry events in Melbourne. Michael Crane has had poems and stories extensively published in Overland, Meanjin, Southerly and many other magazines and newspapers. He had a poem published in the Best Australian Poems 2011 and two poems in the Australian Love poems 2013. He organised what he believe was the first Poetry Slam in Australia in 1991 as part of the Melbourne Fringe Festival. He organised Poetry Idol with heats at several libraries and the final held at the Melbourne Writers Festival to large audiences from 2007 to 2012. He was the managing editor of the Song lyrics, poetry and fiction annual magazine called the Paradise Anthology and the final issue, number 7 will be published early December. Submissions closed.
He has had four books published with independent publishers and his current book is called Postcards from the End of the World: a Michael Crane sampler. It contains 103 poems and almost twenty micro stories in the form of postcards about a mythical city above a waterfall where strange things happen like a woman kisses men and they shrink, a bull that cannot die, a wicked witch who wants to be good, a bitter man who collects women’s ponytails and many others. The book also contains some of Michael’s longer fiction.

JANET GALBRAITH was born in Way Wurru country – North East Victoria and currently lives in Jaara country – Castlemaine. Janet’s poetry is often concerned with memory, place, history and the fragmenting effects of trauma. Her work has been performed at festivals, published in online and print journals within Australia and presented alongside her visual art in both group and solo exhibitions. Janet was Director of the Broken Hill and Far West NSW Writer’s Centre through the mid 2000’s. She currently runs the Castlemaine Vigil in Recognition of Aboriginal Sovereignty and in Solidarity with Refugees. Her first collection of poetry, ‘re-membering’, published by Walleah Press, will be launched in October 2013.

Πέθανε, σε ηλικία 74 ετών, ο Ιρλανδός ποιητής Σέιμους Χήνυ, ο οποίος θεωρούνταν από πολλούς ως ο σημαντικότερος ποιητής της χώρας του από την εποχή του Γέητς.

Ο Χήνυ γεννήθηκε το 1939 στην επαρχία Μόσμπον, στην κομητεία του Ντέρι (Βόρεια Ιρλανδία). Πρώτο παιδί εννεαμελούς αγροτικής οικογένειας καθολικών, σπούδασε στο Columb’s College του Ντέρι και έπειτα στο Πανεπιστήμιο Queen’s του Μπέλφαστ, στο οποίο αργότερα δίδαξε ο ίδιος. Το 1972 αποφάσισε να εγκατασταθεί στη Δημοκρατία της Ιρλανδίας και μοίραζε τον χρόνο του ανάμεσα στο Δουβλίνο και τη Βοστόνη, όπου δίδασκε λογοτεχνία στο Πανεπιστήμιο του Χάρβαρντ. Διετέλεσε καθηγητής ποίησης στο Πανεπιστήμιο της Οξφόρδης από το 1989 ώς το 1994.

Το 1995 του απονεμήθηκε το Νομπέλ Λογοτεχνίας. Η είδηση της βράβευσης τον βρήκε σε ένα ταξίδι στην Ελλάδα· συγκεκριμένα στην Αρκαδία, στην οποία, όπως δήλωνε ο ίδιος, επέστρεφαν τόσο αυτός όσο και τα ποιήματά του.

Στα ελληνικά έχουν κυκλοφορήσει τα έργα του: «Η κυβέρνηση της γλώσσας» (Πατάκης), «Η ελληνική εμπειρία» (Νεφέλη), «Το αλφάδι» (Ερμής) και «Τα ποιήματα του βάλτου» (Καστανιώτης).

Την Κυριακή, 18 Αυγούστου και 3.00 μ.μ., στην αίθουσα του οικήματος του Φιλανθρωπικού Συλλόγου των Ιθακησίων, 329 Elizabeth Street, θα λάβει χώρα η εκδήλωση Ένα απόγευμα με την Έρμα Βασιλείου.

Το λογοτεχνικό απόγευμα, που προτάθηκε και σχεδιάστηκε από τη συγγραφέα, υποστηρίζεται από τον Ελληνο-Αυστραλιανό Πολιτιστικό Σύνδεσμο που με πρωτοβουλία του ανέλαβε να την πραγματοποιήσει από κοινού με τον Σύνδεσμο Ελλήνων Λογοτεχνών και Συγγραφέων Αυστραλίας

Στη συνάντηση, η ακαδημαϊκός και ποιήτρια θα μοιραστεί με τους παρευρισκόμενους έργα από όλες τις λογοτεχνικές πτυχές της, σε μια προσπάθεια προ-παρουσίασης ενός μελλοντικού, μεγαλύτερου αριθμού τίτλων βιβλίων της. Μεταφράσεις σε έργα Γάλλων ποιητών του 20ου αιώνα, λογοτεχνικά δοκίμια και άρθρα, βιβλιοκριτική και άλλα θα παρουσιαστούν από τη συγγραφέα στο πρώτο μέρος της εκδήλωσης. Στο δεύτερο θα γίνουν γνωστά τρία νέα ποιητικά της έργα.

Τις σύντομες αναλύσεις ανέλαβαν ο ακαδημαϊκός και ποιητής δρ Χρήστος Φίφης, ο ποιητής και πεζογράφος Νίκος Πιπέρης και ο πάντα γνωστός για τη νεωτεριστική λογοτεχνική του δράση ποιητής Δημήτρης Τρωαδίτης. Η παρουσία του προσωπικού γυμναστή και motivational speaker Αντώνη Φασουλιώτη (γιου της ποιήτριας), με μια σύντομη ομιλία του, θα πλαισιώσει την εκδήλωση.

Στο τέλος θα προσφερθούν ροφήματα και παραδοσιακές ελληνικές και γαλλικές λιχουδιές.

On Friday 9th August 2013, the Greek Australian Cultural League will be introducing American publisher and poet David Messineo to the Australian audience. David, the author of eight poetry collections, will recite selected works from his recently published Historiopticon, a book which examines legendary figures, events, and personal sentiments relating to subsequent eras of American history.

Accompanying him with compositions of their own will be a group of eight Australian poets: Pixie Trangas, Nick Trakakis, Gaetana Pellegrini, Gaylene Carbis, Monica Athanasiou, Paul Kiritsis and others.

The event will be held at the Workshop Space on the Fourth Floor of The Wheeler Centre at 176 Little Lonsdale Street in Melbourne. We hope to see you all there for a supernal night of poetic contemplation!

David Messineo’s bio:

David Messineo is among the 20 longest-serving poetry editors and 
independent literary magazine publishers in America, having started as a 
poetry editor in 1979 and independent publisher in 1981. He is a rare 
three-consecutive-year winner in the national American Literary Magazine 
Awards (1994-1996) for Sensations Magazine (www.sensationsmag.com), 
which closes service in July 2014 after 27 years of service to poets and 
fiction writers. He was one of 26 individuals to receive a 2009 New 
Jersey State Jefferson Award for Public Service, and won the 2011 Dwyer 
Award for Journalism in New Jersey History for some of his history 
research. David is the author of eight published poetry collections: 
First Impressions, Suburban Gothic, A Taste of Italy, Restoration, A Taste of Brazil, Formal, The Search for the 
Sapphire Robe, and Historiopticon. His ninth poetry collection, 
Trailblazer, is planned for 2021, which will mark his 50th anniversary 
of poetry writing, and the start of his sixth decade in this field.

Στο πλαίσιο της Έκθεσης Τέχνης Antipodean Palette, που διεξήχθη στην Γκαλερί Steps (62 Lygon Street, στο Carlton South), o Eλληνο-Aυστραλιανός Πολιτιστικός Σύνδεσμος Mελβούρνης, οργάνωσε και παρουσίασε την Κυριακή, 30 Ιουνίου, το απόγευμα, δίγλωσσο Ποιητικό Απόγευμα, με την επωνυμία «Tραγούδια Ερμηνευμένα Ενάντια στην Σιωπή».

Ήταν ένα ομολογουμένως επιτυχημένο ποιητικό και λογοτεχνικό απόγευμα από πλευράς όχι μόνο του ότι οι αναγνώσεις ήταν δίγλωσσες, αλλά και του ότι κατά κύριο λόγο η παρουσία της λεγόμενης δεύτερης γενιάς Ελλήνων που γράφουν και εκφράζονται στην αγγλική γλώσσα ήταν καθοριστική.

Στην εκδήλωση παρουσίασαν ποιητικές τους συνθέσεις –και όχι μόνο– δέκα σύγχρονοι αλλά και παλαιότεροι Eλληνοαυστραλοί ποιητές, οι Γιώργος Aθανασίου, Mόνικα Aθανασίου, Σαλώμη Aργυροπούλου, Παναγιώτα Mαλαπάνη, Θεοδώρα Πουλοπούλου, Kωνσταντίνος Kαλύμνιος, Γιώργος Μουρατίδης, Αθηνά Γκινάκη, Δημήτρης Tρωαδίτης και Aπόστολος Kυρίτσης. Επίσης, ο Παύλος Ανδρόνικος παρουσίασε δύο ποιήματά του για την Κύπρο στα αγγλικά.

Την εκδήλωση άνοιξε η πρόεδρος του Eλληνο-Aυστραλιανού Πολιτιστικού Συνδέσμου Mελβούρνης, κ. Καίτη Αλεξοπούλου. Σύντομο χαιρετισμό απηύθυνε η γενική πρόξενος της Ελλάδας στη Μελβούρνη, κ. Ελένη Λιανίδου. Την εκδήλωση συντόνισε με επιτυχία ο αντιπρόεδρος του Eλληνο-Aυστραλιανού Πολιτιστικού Συνδέσμου Mελβούρνης, Απόστολος Κυρίτσης, στον οποίο ανήκε και η όλη οργάνωση.

Περιδιαβαίνοντας τη σύγχρονη αμερικανόφωνη αραβική ποίηση, συναντάμε τη Μόχα Καφ. Μουσουλμάνα, μετανάστρια, φεμινίστρια, ακαδημαϊκός, και ακτιβίστρια, συνθέτει μια ιδιαίτερη ποιητική φωνή που, άλλοτε λυρική και χαμηλόφωνη, άλλοτε σαρκαστική και ηχηρή, θίγει ζητήματα ταυτότητας, ανακύκλωσης στερεοτύπων και επανοηματοδότησης της παράδοσης. Kai Pohl
Μια από τις πιο δραστήριες φιγούρες του βερολινέζικου αντεργκράουντ, ο Κάι Πολ μοντάρει και μεταστρέφει υλικά που αντλεί κυρίως από το διαδίκτυο, καθώς και από λογοτεχνικά και φιλοσοφικά έργα. Με αφορμή τον ριζοσπάστη ποιητή Στέφαν Ντέρινγκ, ερευνούμε τη λογοτεχνική ιστορία της Ανατολικής Γερμανίας, με έμφαση στη δεκαετία του ’80, όταν μία ομάδα νεαρών ποιητών πρωτοστάτησε στο τελευταίο αβάν-γκαρντ κίνημα του 20ού αιώνα στην Ευρώπη, ενάντια στους γλωσσικούς κανόνες και στο συλλογικό ψέμα του κυρίαρχου λόγου. Ελλειπτική και ρευστή, ερωτική και αισθησιακή, η ποίηση της Νικόλ Μπροσάρ εδώ και σαράντα χρόνια σπάει τη μονολιθικότητα του πατριαρχικού λόγου. As part of the Antipodean Palette 2013, art exhibition, the Greek-Australian Cultural League will be organizing on an afternoon of bi-lingual poetic compositions in its plight to promote the written word.

This program will feature select works from nine contemporary Greek-Australian poets:

George Athanasiou, Monica Athanasiou, Salome Argyropoulos, Petr Malapanis, Dorothy Poulopoulos, Dean Kalimniou, Jenny Stamatelos, Dimitris Troaditis, and Paul Kiritsis.

Come and join them for what will be a splendid, magical, and eventful afternoon of ‘Songs Sung Against the Silence’
