Who was Rhonda Jankovic?
Rhonda Jankovic survived an abused childhood and developed a passion for life and learning. Leaving school at the age of 14, she subsequently studied and achieved entry to La Trobe University where she reached postgraduate level researching Australian history. As producer and host of two radio programs on 3CR – ‘Spoken Word’ (poetry) and ‘SUWA’ (current affairs) – Rhonda was a staunch advocate for emerging poets and justice for those disadvantaged in society. She died of cancer on 25 November 2012 at the age of 49.

What is social justice?
Social justice relates to inequalities stemming from power relations, indifference or exploitation. It is associated with, for instance, economic conditions, health, education, dis/ability, ethnicity, race, gender, sexual orientation, age, and violence. Entries may identify inequalities by observation and/or advocate solutions.

CONDITIONS OF ENTRY

• Poems need to be a maximum length of 50 lines
• A fee of A$5 applies to each poem entered, which is non-refundable in any circumstances
• There is no limit on the number of entries. However, the entry fee is to be paid for each poem entered
• Poems entered must be the original unpublished work of the entrant; not have been previously awarded a monetary prize; not have been entered into any other current competition, nor under consideration by a publisher, prior to 24 March 2014 (date that winners are announced)
• Entries to be typed, preferably in Times New Roman. If other fonts are used, it’s advisable they be plain rather than fancy/calligraphic. Pages to be numbered with poem’s title at top of each page. Do not include illustrations or photos
• Entrants name is not to appear on manuscripts; name on Entry Form only
• Three hardcopies of each poem entered is to be provided
• Excepting members of Rhonda Jankovic Society Management Committee, any person may enter
• Those who achieve awards (1st/2nd/3rd Prizes, Commendation Certificates) will be advised. Others will be provided with results if they apply an email address or a stamped self-addressed envelope with an Australian destination
• Entrants permit that, if any of their entries are awarded a prize (1st/2nd/3rd), these prize-winning poem(s) may be, without payment to the author, distributed in hard-copy at the Awards Presentation function and likewise be read on Radio 3CR ‘Spoken Word’ program including any repeat broadcasts of that particular episode. The Society’s right to provide copies is restricted to one Awards Presentation event
• Judges will be poets with appropriate publication and/or award credentials
• Judges’ decision is final. Entries will be destroyed after judging
• Entries which do not meet these conditions will not be judged
