PRESS RELEASE
‘re-membering’ by Janet Galbraith
a new collection of poetry from Walleah Press
‘re-membering’, a collection of poetry by Janet Galbraith, published by renowned poetry publisher, Walleah Press, will be launched in Castlemaine, Victoria, on Saturday 26th October 2013.
This collection grows out of the Janet Galbraith’s lived experiences of trauma induced ‘mental illness’.
Influenced by poets as diverse as Lisa Bellear, Olav. H. Hague and Audre Lorde, her poetry traverses countries from Broken Hill to Bendigo, celebrates the dark space between stars and illuminates the effects of individual and collective trauma.
These are not poems of complaint, but of courage – where beauty is inscribed in the observation of the everyday, connection with the natural world and the careful crafting of form and language.
‘re-membering’, knits together shards of memory and place, shade and colour, country and history, creating a nuanced body of work.
Professor Suvendrini Perera writes:
“In what little sun/ this day allows”, Janet Galbraith writes poems of rare clarity, precision and beauty: poems as luminous as shards of coloured glass and that score and cut as deep. Deceptively simple lines reveal unexpected depths and shades and are saturated with meaning. Troubling, mysterious, relentless, affirming, this is an unforgettable collection.
-Professor Suvendrini Perera, Professor of Cultural Studies, Curtin University
