Julia Fortouni, Yellow-necked

Sandy+Skoglund

Every summer
Is a slain bird
Watermelon seeds spouted from inside
Memory of a carefree and a bygone joy

But all its bowels are yellow
Its wings and beak
Libation to wear
Of the upcoming winter
For little ones to be born the next summer
Flying in swarms
The yellow-necked
Above the sea shore
Spitting all the pips

And us under colorful beach umbrellas
Pretending the unsuspecting bathers

For dying all the summers
All the yellow birds on their time
